First time playing Subnautica 2 no direction for new players…
Hey,
I started playing Subnautica 2. I always wanted to buy and play the first game, but I never got around to it and decided to wait for the sequel instead.
So far, my experience has honestly been more confusing than enjoyable. Right at the beginning, it already felt frustrating trying to find the levers on the backside of the “hub” because there was barely any clear direction or visual guidance. I spent a lot of time just swimming around trying to understand what the game even wanted me to do.
After finally landing in the actual ocean world, I felt completely lost. I picked up a fish that I suddenly couldn’t put away anymore, and then somehow I got poisoned without even understanding what caused it. Moments like that make it hard for new players because the game throws mechanics at you before properly explaining them.
I kept exploring and collecting random materials, but I had no idea what most of them were for or whether they were even important. Then I found the „workbench/fabricator“, but again I didn’t really know what I was supposed to craft first, which resources I should focus on collecting, or where to even find those resources.
I understand that exploration and discovery are part of the experience, and I actually like survival games, but I feel like the game desperately needs a softer introduction for completely new players. Even a short optional tutorial with basic explanations about inventory management, crafting priorities, food, danger, and early progression would make a huge difference.
Right now it feels less like natural exploration and more like being dropped into a massive ocean with no understanding of the mechanics, no clear early goals, and almost no guidance at all. For experienced players this is probably exciting, but for someone completely new to the series it can feel overwhelming very quickly 😕
