NOW! I am only 2 hours into the game so far, but this game has such love crafted into every single detail, and it runs pretty damn good for my 3060 on 1440p, it rounded just under 60 FPS, which for a game this detailed and a graphics card that is over 5 years old and almost 3 generations of GPU behind. It is pretty great!
But this isn't about performance, it is about the detailing for me, from the design of the fish, the story, the soft tutorial that the game puts you through, it shows a level of dedication to the craft and is MILES BETTER than the games from AAA Companies have put out in recent years. I think that Subnautica 2 might get GOTY this year, as graphically, it is the most beautiful game that has come out this year, that isn't a hyper realistic mess, its gameplay is so nice to dance with, and it is so engaging that I didn't even realize I lost two hours to it!
And as the game industry changes, I think we will be seeing more games with these sandboxy, base-building, plot-driven stories, like Abiotic Factor, for example. More games that have an era of freedom for players while allowing them to explore without tying them down too much are great, and might be the future for AAA games, as most of them have nearly abandoned story modes for multiplayer.
TLDR: Game is fantastic and gives players so much freedom while still guiding them naturally that AAA companies should take note.
