Concentrated sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Colloquially known as lye.
A highly corrosive base, the chemical opposite of an acid. Where acids have a pH approaching 0 and release hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water, bases have a pH approaching 14, and release hydroxide (OH-) ions when dissolved. These negatively charged ions strip protons from other substances, breaking them down.
Lye attacks some metals and most living tissue, especially fat, which it converts into soap via a process termed saponification.
Some organisms on Proteus apparently produce and concentrate lye, perhaps as a byproduct of methanogenic symbiote activity or as a digestive agent.
Assessment: dangerously reactive. Will dissolve into seawater if not handled carefully. Possible source of industrial quantities of sodium.
