There are two of them in the game: one patrols the area above the **Karakorum Metal Farms**, and the other resides in the trench of the **Intermediary Basin**.+ ## Appearance The Collector Leviathan is an enormous cephalopod-like creature with a turquoise body adorned with paler blue patterning on the forehead. Atop the head is a huge purple sonar structure which can emit light of various colors. This structure is usually enveloped by two folds of skin which bear a pair of long fins at the tip and a second pair close to their base, with a third pair of fins situated posteriorly. The Collector has a single pair of amber eyes with horizontal pupils, and three pairs of siphons of varying sizes positioned around the head. An array of small tentacles, ten in total, form a line above the mouth, which takes the form of a hard beak flanked by two pairs of curved black hooks and a pair of jointed raptorial limbs. -In addition to the small oral tentacles, the Collector possesses two pairs of extremely large tentacles situated behind the mouth. These tentacles are longer than the rest of the body and have tripartite ends, forming "fingers" with two distinct functions; the outer pair of tentacles have clawed fingers, whilst the inner pair of tentacles have soft, flexible fingers. The ventral side of the tentacles are dark red and striated.+In addition to the small oral tentacles, the Collector possesses two pairs of extremely large tentacles situated behind the mouth. These tentacles are longer than the rest of the body and have tripartite ends, forming "fingers" with two distinct functions: the outer pair of tentacles have clawed fingers, whilst the inner pair of tentacles have soft, flexible fingers. The ventral side of the tentacles are dark red and striated. From the tip of its head to the end of its tentacles, the Collector Leviathan is approximately 110m long. ## Behavior Upon noticing the player, the Collector Leviathan emits a sonar pulse and turns toward the detected prey, propelling itself with its siphons. Unlike Earth squids, the Collector swims facing forward. When initiating a chase with the player, the Collector Leviathan's head will open up, revealing a "Broadcast Organ", and its markings will begin to glow. This is purely visual and has no effect on gameplay. If the leviathan successfully grabs the player, a short cinematic will play where the creature eats the player, killing them instantly. -The Collector is capable of grabbing and then throwing the Tadpole, doing a small amount of damage. It is also capable of swiping at the Tadpole for far greater damage. A Collector will spawn shortly after a player enters the zone. Each spawn zone can only spawn one Collector Leviathan regardless of how many players are within it, but different spawn zones can spawn Collector Leviathans simultaneously if a player is within each. ## Strategies Like other large lifeforms, Collector Leviathans cannot be killed and therefore must be avoided. * **Distraction Flares** can be used to draw the Collector's attention. * The **Camouflage** biomod works on the Collector.-* The Collector may lose interest in the Tadpole if it breaches the surface. This, along with the **Cavitation Muffler**, can help with crossing the Intermediary Basin.+* The Collector may lose interest in the Tadpole if it breaches the surface. This, along with the **Cavitation Muffler**, can help with crossing the **Intermediary Basin**. * Navigating under the table-like rock formations in this area can prevent the Collector from grabbing the player. If the player stays under the rocks too long, the Collector may use its tentacles to grab them out from under the rocks. ## Databank Entry **Enormous cephalopod predator** (tentatively *Tyrannoteuthis phobocoeus*, tyrant squid of fearful curiosity). Feeds on hard-shelled, heavily defended prey. Solitary but highly intelligent. Likely a deep-sea creature. 1. **Squidlike body plan**: The collector's body converges with Earth squid — a long mantle and several limbs attached directly to the head. The mantle is covered in plastic armor. Unlike Earth squid, the collector has four long hunting tentacles with dextrous claws. Its eight arms are small and grouped around the beak. 2. **Powerful thruster**: Two large spiracles feed a rear-facing thruster. These spiracles are separate from the four gills openings on the head, allowing the collector to separate its breath rate from its thrust speed. Two secondary hearts pump blood from the gills to the main heart. 3. **Hard prey**: An enormous beak (capable of tearing through plate titanium) and four dextrous tentacles tipped with sharp bioglass claws imply that the collector specializes in prying or tearing open heavily armored prey. Possible prey fauna include the coral crab and great jaw. The need to defeat armored, active prey may have evolved a curious and aggressive psychology. 4. **Broadcast organ**: This huge, many-chambered organ is a biological phased-array sonar. Multiple 'speakers' and 'ears' allow the collector to broadcast complex multi-part pulses. Dense innervation connects this organ to the toroidal brain; patterns of bioluminescence may be direct reflections of the collector's brain activity. 5. **W-shaped pupil**: In bright light the pupil creases into a W. This trait was present in Earth cephalopods, but its function was not determined before the Holocene collapse. 6. **Abyssal gigantism**: Organisms from the deep sea are often very large, a phenomenon known as 'abyssal gigantism'. **Assessment**: Hunters with varied and difficult diets are likely to be intelligent and inquisitive, and a predator's curiosity may appear to prey as arbitrary torture. Any small submersible or habitat is likely to draw the collector's interest. ## Gallery ### In Game ![The front of the Collector](Collector Full Body.png) ![The side of the Collector](Collector Side.png) ![The back of the Collector](Collector Back.png) ![The Collector's unclawed fingers](Collector Unclawed Fingers.png) ![The Collector's clawed fingers](Collector Clawed Fingers.png) ![A close-up of the Collector's mouth](Collector Open Mouth.png) ![The Collector next to a player](Collector Size Reference.png) ![A close-up view of the Collector's face](CollectorCloseup.png) ![The Collector Leviathan eating the player](CollectorNomNomAnimation.gif) ![The Collector Leviathan grabbing the Tadpole then throwing it](CollectorTadpoleAnimation.gif) ### Development ![Concept art sheets that led to the Collector](CollectorConceptSheet1.png) ![Concept sheets that led to the Collector](CollectorConceptSheet2.png) ![Early concept art of the Collector](CollectorConceptSheet3.png) ![Concept art exploring the Collector's opening head](CollectorConceptSheet4.png) ![Concepts for the Collector's internal structure](CollectorConceptSheet5.png) ![Pattern concepts](CollectorPatternConcept.png) ![Concepts for the Collector's mouth structure](CollectorMouthConcepts1.png) ![Ditto](Collector Leviathan Wietze Fopma 1.jpg) ![Details on beak design](CollectorMouthConcepts3.png) ![Renders of the Collector](Collector Leviathan Wietze Fopma 2.jpg) ### Videos Subnautica 2 Dev Vlog - Creating the Collector Leviathan ### Model ![Collector Leviathan model with size measurements](CollectorModelLabelled.jpeg) ## Trivia -* The Collector serves as a secondary mascot of Subnautica 2 and can be seen on the main keyart, with the primary mascot of the game being the Halfmoon.+* The Collector serves as a secondary mascot of **Subnautica 2** and can be seen on the main keyart, with the primary mascot of the game being the **Halfmoon**. * The species epithet "Phobocoeus" is a portmanteau of "Phobos" the Greek god of fear, and Coeus, a Titan in Greek mythology who represents the inquisitive and curious mind. * W-shaped pupils are seen in real world cuttlefish in order to reduce light and contrast from bright, shallow-water environments. According to its entry, this occurs when the Collector enters high-light environments, potentially indicating the organism has eyes adapted for both deep seas and shallow waters. This could be an adaptation for a process analogous to the vertical migrations of many Earth squid species, known as diel vertical migration. * Internally, the Collector Leviathan is simply known as "Leviathan_01". Likely indicating that it was the first to be added.
