Context and Sources

Just over a week ago, Co-founders of Unknown Worlds, Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire were fired abruptly and without reason.

It’s important to note that they had little involvement in development of Subnautica 2 itself.

The community was given no reason why, and we can only continue to speculate.

However, today, Krafton delayed Subnautica 2 to 2026. Despite developers maintaining their original deadline as soon as 2 days ago.

It’s also been revealed that had Unknown Worlds reached a quota this year, they would have received 250 million dollars in bonuses that would be spread to ALL staff.

This delay is simply so they don’t have to give those bonuses. They’ve already made 250 million dollars off of scamming developers. Don’t let them make more.

Subnautica 2 faces multiple controversies, including concerns about its developer Krafton's business practices, the game's End User License Agreement (EULA), and a community debate surrounding the game's creature interaction and combat mechanics.

Krafton's Business Practices

  • Bonus Controversy: Krafton reportedly delayed Subnautica 2 to avoid paying a $250 million bonus to the development team, which was contingent on the game releasing within a certain timeframe.
  • Developer Firings and Reinstatement: The co-founders of Unknown Worlds, Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire, were initially fired without clear reasons. However, they were later reinstated by court order, and Krafton no longer profits from Subnautica 2.
  • Community Boycott Efforts: Many Redditors expressed intentions to boycott the game or remove it from their wishlists in protest of Krafton's actions.

EULA Concerns

  • Unfavorable Terms: The game's EULA contains clauses that many users find concerning, particularly regarding company ownership of in-game items and the ability to modify the game remotely. "Company may provide updates, patches and other modifications to the Game that must be installed for the User to continue to play the Game properly or at all."
  • Lack of Ownership: The EULA states that players have no title or ownership of the game or its in-game items, which some argue is becoming a troubling industry norm.
  • Enforceability Doubts: Some users believe certain terms, such as those allowing modifications without notice, are not legally enforceable, especially in regions like the EU.

Creature Interaction and Combat Debate

  • No-Kill Philosophy: Subnautica 2 continues the series' design philosophy of emphasizing vulnerability, exploration, and survival over traditional weapon-based combat, meaning players cannot kill hostile creatures.
  • Frustration with Mitigation: Many players are frustrated that current non-lethal mitigation and avoidance tools for aggressive creatures are ineffective, leading to a desire for more decisive options.
  • Developer Response: The developers acknowledge player feedback regarding creature balance and mitigation tools, promising improvements to creature behavior and the effectiveness of deterrents like flares and the Survival Tool.
