What is your take on Subnautica 2?

A veteran player shares mixed early impressions of Subnautica 2, critiquing the shift in tech aesthetics and generic base building while affirming intent to purchase and play.

It’s been a little while since I checked in on Subnautica 2, and after watching the new footage, I’ve got mixed feelings. I’m not trying to jump onto any negativity. I love this series. I bought both Subnautica and Below Zero on day one, and I’ve put more than three thousand hours into them. I’ve modded them, speed-ran them, and dug into every corner those games have to offer. So I’m not coming at this as someone who barely knows the franchise.

These are just my early thoughts, and they aren’t final. I’m not settling on an opinion until I’ve played the game at least twice, beaten it, and tried everything it offers. But for now, here’s where I stand.

Tech Aesthetics

First, the tech. To me, it just doesn’t look like Subnautica. The style almost feels like it was taken from a completely different sci-fi universe. I get wanting a fresh direction, but the tech in the first two games had a unique look — smooth, bright, handheld, and instantly recognizable as Subnautica. What I’m seeing now feels safer and much closer to the style used in a bunch of other sci-fi games. It loses that signature feel the series built up.

Base Building

Second, the base building. I always play with a lot of base mods because I love designing big, detailed spaces. I enjoy having freedom and strong customization. But the bases shown in Subnautica 2 seem pretty generic. They’re simple box-style rooms with lots of customization options, but nothing about them really stands out as something only Subnautica would do. And since the surrounding tech style also looks different, the overall identity slips even more. I’d enjoy it more if the interior and exterior carried that recognizable Subnautica style, but right now they mostly look like white rooms with lights and a few pieces of equipment.

Overall Impressions

I’m not judging the vehicles yet because we haven’t seen much of them, and the world itself does look good so far. Overall, my feelings land at “it’s fine,” and I’m absolutely going to buy it and play it a ton. Maybe once I’m actually in the world, I’ll warm up to the new direction. I just don’t feel, at this point, that it’s shaping up to top the first Subnautica.

That’s where I’m at. I’d like to hear what you think too — maybe you noticed something I didn’t, or maybe there’s a reason behind these changes that makes more sense from another angle. Feel free to comment.

One last thing: please don’t bring up that big bonus given out by Krafton. I’ve seen it everywhere, and I’m just tired of hearing about it.
