Necroleis are very large, anchored Lifeforms, and the adult form of the Necrolei Cyst.
Appearance
The Necrolei's body has the rough shape of an inverted trumpet, with the outer edge being wavy rather than circular. Its outer surface is marked by deep, blue ridges. The tissue below that is colored dark brown. In the center of its open cavity lies a round protuberance, somewhat resembling a mouth. The top ridge of its body is lined by soft, pink, anemone-like arms, which glow brightly in the dark.
Juvenile Necroleis appear as described above, whereas older individuals stack several of these units on top of one another, decreasing in size from the bottom to the top. Older Necroleis can consist of a stack of about six of these units.
Databank Entry
Necrolei
Anthobrachia necrolei. A clonal stalk of large jellies, similar to Earth's stauromedusae. Each jelly remains moored to the stalk, rather than maturing into a free-swimming medusa.
1. Enormous size and hunger
Rather than feeding on prey, the necrolei gathers dead matter from the seawater. The size and height of the stalk are directly related to the rate of death and decay up-current.
2. Acid-yielding metabolism
The necrolei has adapted to low-oxygen seawater. It ferments dead matter in a central 'basket' stomach, yielding strong acids which it uses for defense.
3. Biological immortality
When aged, injured, or starving, the necrolei reverts to its juvenile polyp stage, a cyst anchored to the sea floor. Defended by its acid, this cyst can survive indefinitely before returning to its adult form. These cysts bud off clones called ephyrae, which drift in the current in search of new feeding territory.
Assessment: large numbers of necrolei in this region indicate a bloom, a population explosion caused by a flood of nutrients. This is a poor sign for the health of the ecosystem and perhaps for the state of the global climate.
The buds of the necrolei's cyst stage can be processed into strong acid. Search in and around necrolei stalks.
