"This scanner modification employs cultured alien bacteria to spawn metallic markers. You will notice that happy bacteria smell like beets." — PDA upon first creation of Bioscanner
A Bioscanner is a Scanner upgraded by Axum technology via an upgrade at the Modification Station.
Appearance
The Bioscanner appears as a modified Scanner, with several Axum-themed attachments added onto the front and sides. The light and effects on objects are a green color.

Usage
The Bioscanner acts as a regular Scanner, but features extended functionality by allowing to scan otherwise unscannable Axum technology such as the turbine at the Power Plant.
Unlike the regular Scanner, the Bioscanner also allows to unlock the use of new Biomods at the Biolab via the scanning of various Lifeforms. Upon bio-scanning a creature for the first time with the Bioscanner, its Biomod will unlock and be available at the Biolab. Certain Biomods require the bio scan of multiple Lifeforms. Some Lifeforms do not count towards any Biomod unlocks.
All scanned Lifeforms will count towards a total bio scan tally, when enough bio scans are acquired, additional passive Biomod slots will be unlocked. The total bio scan count can be viewed at a Biolab.
Bio Scans
Below is a list of scannable things that count as bio scans.
Recipe
The Bioscanner blueprint is unlocked by scanning the Bioscanner found in the EVA Prep wreck.

| Scanner | 1 |
| Enameled Glass | 2 |
| Conduit Crystal | 3 |
Crafted at: Modification Station
Fragments
The fragment is located at the entrance of the EVA Prep wreck at a depth of 140m.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Scan Axum technology to generate repair or fabrication blueprints. Scan living targets to unlock new biomods.
BACKGROUND The Protean ocean contains huge amounts of dissolved metal ions and viral DNA. Protean life has evolved to use one to identify the other.
The bioscanner hosts metal-eating bacteria which produce a robust beet odor and trillions of metallic marker proteins. In the wild, these markers bind to viral DNA, allowing the bacteria to incorporate or reject it. In the bioscanner, these markers are broadcast to the target by the scan field.
- In living targets, the markers bind to Protean DNA, allowing the scanner to conduct advanced analytic biochemistry and generate new biomods
- In Axum targets, the markers bind to circuits, transistors, and bacterial fibers for functional analysis of Axum technology
The difficulty of analyzing alien biochemistries in digital simulation may have contributed to the extinction of the Architect civilization. Perhaps they lacked friendly beet-flavored bacteria.
