Overview
Phasegates, or Phase Gates, are a central technology in the Subnautica universe. As the only means of faster-than-light (FTL) travel, Phasegates are crucial for humanity's expansion into and colonisation of space.
Phasegate technology was independently invented by both humanity and the Architects, who were also able to implement miniaturised Phase technology into their own biomechanical bodies.
Although Phasegates allow for faster-than-light travel between them, both sides of the Phasegate must be manually constructed. This means that a starship must first reach the desired end point through conventional spaceflight to construct the Phasegate. This limitation appears to be relevant to both human and Architect Phasegates, though it appears short-range phase jumps or "blinks" can be performed without a gate.
Human Phasegates
After the events of Subnautica, the Alterra Corporation was able to miniaturise Phasegate technology. This allowed for the creation of personnel-sized Phasegates employed by the Trans-System Federation in Kharaa combat.
Architect Phasegates
An Architect Phasegate is theorised by Nahema Nakota to be what caused the Cicada NoA node to divert from its path and phase jump to Proteus. This theory is supported by the native Axum's awareness of the Architects.
