Subnautica 2 Early Access Experience: Is It Worth Playing Now?

A community overview of Subnautica 2's Early Access state, highlighting improved graphics, QoL upgrades, and base building, while noting missing content like vehicles and story completeness.

Early Access State Overview

Subnautica 2 is currently in Early Access. While it is obviously incomplete, many players report it is very playable and feels like a full game in terms of core mechanics. However, significant content is still missing, including most vehicles (only one available so far), large portions of the world map, and the complete story arc.

For those who disliked the unpolished state of Below Zero at launch, opinions are mixed. Some recommend waiting 5 months for more story content, while others argue the current 5-8 hours of gameplay, combined with base building and crafting, is worth the $30 price tag immediately.

Gameplay Mechanics and Improvements

The game introduces several Quality of Life (QoL) upgrades over the original Subnautica:

  • Power System: A simplified power system where transmitters are more effective.
  • Crafting: Players can now craft using resources directly from storage.
  • Resource Gathering: Faster and more streamlined collection processes.
  • Modifications: A new modification system for equipment.

One controversial change is the inability to kill creatures. Some players have expressed frustration with hyper-aggressive fauna that cannot be defeated, only avoided or deterred.

World Design and Atmosphere

The map consists of approximately 7 biomes. While the total area might be smaller than the first game's map initially, the density is higher, and slower player movement makes the world feel significantly larger. The graphics and lighting have received high praise, with many considering them top-tier.

The sound design contributes to terrifying moments, enhancing the survival horror aspect. The story pacing is described as engaging, balancing narrative progression with downtime for base building and exploration.

Early Game Tip: Finding Silver

Silver is one of the hardest materials to locate in the early game and is required to craft the first O2 tank. Many players spend their first two hours searching for it.

Location Tip: There is a biome located approximately 300m North from the lifepod (slightly left of the tree's direction). This area is rich in Silver deposits and can save significant time during the initial survival phase.
