The BigSub is the current internal name of a large submarine planned to be added in the EA2 update of Subnautica 2, albeit initially in an incomplete state. Previously known internally as the Trident, the name was changed due to potential trademark concerns and to avoid implying too much about the vehicle's capabilities or lore connections.

Overview

Based on its current implementation, accessible through console commands, the main focus of the EA2 update regarding this vehicle will be finding and restoring the wrecked sub to working condition. The wreckage is located in the Tar Delta region.

Restoration Process

To restore the BigSub, the player must:

  1. Locate the wreck in the Tar Delta.
  2. Scan the power core using the Bioscanner.
  3. Repair the power core using the Habitat Builder.
  4. Construct and install the Molten Reactor Fuel Cell (internally referred to as the Axum Fission Core) into the core slot.

The ending screen displayed upon completing the restoration suggests that the sub may not be fully drivable until a later update, though insights into its functionality will begin in EA2.

Design and Lore

  • Origin: The Key Item required for repair is the "Axum Fission Core," and the need for a Bioscanner suggests the submarine may be of Axum design, or a hybrid model.
  • Creator: Logs in the experimental branch reveal that Sophie "Butcher" Boucher was one of the creators of the BigSub. It was designed to be invisible to the NoA (New Ocean Authority).
  • Uniqueness: Only one BigSub exists in the world. It is found, not crafted.

Gameplay Features

  • Durability: Unlike the Cyclops from the original Subnautica, the BigSub will not be fully destructible. It can be put out of commission, but it remains recoverable via repair tools.
  • Multiplayer: The submarine is usable in both singleplayer and multiplayer. While distinct roles ("jobs") may be available for up to 4 co-op players, multiple players are not required to operate it.
  • Interior: Lead developer Anthony Gallegos has suggested the submarine could feature a modular interior, potentially combining free-build spaces with pre-built compartments that can be swapped out.

Repair Recipe

The blockout of the BigSub wreckage contains a "Big Sub Repair Project." The likely resources required for repair are:

IngredientAmount
Plasteel Ingot3
Volatile Acid3
Methane Clathrate2

Crafting Station: Habitat Builder

Trivia

  • The BigSub was designed by Pat Presley, the original designer of the Cyclops and a prolific concept artist for both Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero.
  • The internal name "Trident" was abandoned partially because it implied specific biome or vehicle characteristics that the developers wanted to keep ambiguous during development.
