An alien counterpart to the ISO 6346 intermodal shipping container, designed for undersea cargo handling.
1. Corrosion proof coat
The container's titanium structure is coated in a polymer similar to tunicin. The main ingredient in the coating is encysted sand.
2. Shipping and handling
Hydrodynamic exterior design saves energy when moving through water. Internal pressure vessels can be emptied for buoyancy or flooded as ballast. Exterior fittings lock into other stacked containers, or provide a grip for handling equipment.
3. Equalization valves
Rounded corners reflect the container's design as a pressure vessel. In normal operation, relief valves automatically keep the container's interior pressure equal to the surrounding seawater to prevent crush accidents, but these valves can be locked out when transporting cargo at fixed pressure.
4. Tracking information
Information on origin, destination, and nature of cargo was carved into the container's coating, where it could be quickly read by sonar even in murky or dark water.
Assessment: evidence that the Axum developed large-scale maritime commerce.
