SOPHIE: Chap, I brought you out here to ask—

CHAP: You want me to set up an independent biobed network. So the Habitat NoA doesn't know about the project.

SOPHIE: Well. Yes. Can you do it?

CHAP: The Sleep Bay 3 NoA is disconnected from Habitat. We could copy it here.

SOPHIE: Mm, no. Anita's cult has been there.

CHAP: Well...the biobeds work without NoA. But if the Habitat NoA can't access them, it can't reset people.

SOPHIE: That's fine.

CHAP: It's not fine. Why are you lying to me? Do you think I don't know?

SOPHIE: Chap!

CHAP: You've killed me so many times. And you've been gentle and honest every time. I appreciate it...so much. But honest is more important than gentle.

SOPHIE: Yes. You're right. I'm sorry. You're ahead of me, as always.

CHAP: You told me that NoA has reset us all before. If that worked—if it cured our Masefield—NoA will do it again. Especially if it thinks you're out of control.

SOPHIE: Quaker told me that NoA can go insane, if it's useful. It can justify any action to support the mission...

CHAP: If you set up a separate biobed network, outside its reach, you are creating a reservoir for Masefield. An endless supply of humans NoA can't control.

SOPHIE: If it can't reset us, it can't stop us from going mad.

CHAP: Like Zip. Like Mantis. Like Eddie and everyone else. That's why I'm here, isn't it? You bring the sickest people out here to work. So they'll forget about this place when they reset.

SOPHIE: I'm sorry. I have to triage.

CHAP: Sophie. Listen to me. If you teach NoA that it needs to reset us regularly to keep us working right—it will do that. It will turn us off and on again. Every day.

CHAP: I'm not afraid to die. But I am a software specialist. And I am terrified of being treated like software.
