The barrier

The Early Access Barrier is a long, vertical, orange barrier surrounding the entirety of the map in Subnautica 2. It is an Early Access-only feature, likely to be removed upon or before the game's full release. The barrier expands during Early Access to accommodate the addition of new biomes.

Description

A message appears upon crossing the barrier

The Early Access Barrier defines the playable area of Subnautica 2. It is extremely tall vertically, extending far above the water surface and deep below the seabed. Despite its immense size, it is not visible from a distance and only appears as a shimmering wall of horizontal orange lines when the player is in close proximity.

The barrier is non-physical and does not block the movement of the player or other lifeforms. However, interacting with it triggers specific game mechanics:

  • Warning Message: Upon touching or swimming past the barrier, a screen-wide popup appears stating that Subnautica 2 is in Early Access and that certain mechanics, such as base building, are disabled beyond the wall.
  • Building Restriction: Constructing Seabases is impossible beyond the barrier.
  • Leviathan Spawn: Crossing the barrier immediately spawns a Shiver Leviathan nearby.
  • Survival Mode Danger: If the player crosses into the in-development side while in Survival Mode, the Shiver Leviathan will chase them relentlessly until they return to the safe side.
  • HUD Warning: A red message appears on the player's HUD warning that they are in the "Early Access Preview Area".

Boundary

The barrier encompasses the current playable map boundaries, which expand as new content is added during the Early Access period.
