Repair Tool

Description: Multi-purpose repair tool, functional in all environments.

Build Time: 3 seconds

Size: 1

Debug Spawn ID: welder

The Repair Tool is a tool used to repair damage on vehicles, Seabases, Lifepod 5's Radio, and the secondary systems, damaged doors in the Aurora and its drive core. It is powered with a Battery.

Uses

The Repair Tool is first used to repair the damaged panel to the left of the Fabricator in Lifepod 5 and the Lifepod's Radio, which allows messages to be received (though not sent, as the protagonist is silent).

Afterwards, early on in the game while exploring Wrecks, there can sometimes be a damaged control panel usually identical to the one in Lifepod 5 for doors, which then allows for access or easier access to an interior. Later on, its main role is to replenish the health of the Seamoth, Prawn Suit, and Cyclops, and to fix holes in the hull of the Cyclops and most Seabase modules. It can also repair breaches that appear in the Aurora's generator room, thus containing the leak and causing the radiation around to begin to dissipate.

As it comes with its own battery when fabricated, this can be an alternate way to make new batteries if Acid Mushrooms and Copper Ore are not readily available.

If a Bleeder latches onto the player's arm, the player can use the Repair Tool to hit the Bleeder.

The repair tool can be targeted at any common device - control panels, habitat modules, radios etc. - to stitch wires and seams back together at the atomic level. All good technicians keep one of these under their pillow.

Most people don't care why it works, just that it saved their life that one time - but in case you're curious, it combines scanner and fabricator technologies to determine the proper specifications for the targeted object, and then rearranges the available physical material to match the original specs.

Trivia

  • The idea for the Repair Tool may be taken from Natural Selection 2, where the Welder is used to repair various machinery, much like this one.
  • The original name for the Repair Tool was the Welder.
  • The Repair Tool doesn't require a battery in its recipe, yet spawns with one inside of it, allowing the player to create batteries without acid mushrooms or copper.
  • Unused animations from Trello suggests that the Repair Tool would have operated using consumable canisters of welding material, rather than batteries.
  • In former versions of the game, a Repair Tool and a Diamond was used to create the Laser Cutter.
  • This is the only tool that can be used for crafting besides tools crafted using the Modification Station.
  • The repair tool appears with a battery on the backside which disappears upon being unequipped.
  • The repair tool, despite its id "welder", does not weld and rather rearranges hardware "at the atomic level" after determining the object specifications.
