The Tailings are a group of Axum survivors who inhabited the Karakorum Ruins and Coral Gardens up until recently. The Tailings arose from the remnants of Axum society after its apparent collapse some time in the last few hundred years. Much of the knowledge of the former Axum society has been lost to the Tailings, leading them to fall into a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. The Tailings group likely arose in the past two to three hundred years following the collapse of the Axum civilisation.
As observed by Udal Singh, the Tailings are noticeably inexperienced survivalists, relying on repurposing existing scrap for most of their tools and buildings.
Pioneers encountered and had interactions with the Tailings in the past, but the nature of these interactions is unknown. It seems that they ended up causing conflict between the groups, with the Tailings becoming extremely hostile to the point of killing Pioneers on sight. NoA has noted that multiple non-human visitors, likely Tailings, have entered the Research Outpost within the past 10,000 hours (~416 days).
Tools
The Tailings make use of basic tools and weaponry such as spears and axes constructed from organic materials and scrap metal. Tailing tools can be found scattered throughout the world and on one occasion used to mark a gravesite. Tailings killed Pioneers with their spears on more than one occasion, with Udal Singh in particular having been impaled on three separate occasions.
Architecture

A group of Tailings formerly lived at the Tailings Village located in the Graveyard; however, this settlement now lays abandoned, with their current location unknown. The Tailings homes are haphazardly cobbled together from scraps of old Axum architecture as well as animal skins and coral. They also make use of Alterra scrap.
A Tailings gravesite is located close to the Tailings Village. It comprises three graves side by side, each marked with different items used as gravemarkers and different grave offerings:
- Left Grave: Marked by two spears pushed into the sand and has a Coral Jar and Small Coral Jar at their base.
- Middle Grave: Marked by two branches of purple coral with a Hanging Tailing Jar between them and a piece of what appears to be jewellery over the left piece of coral, and something resembling a dreamcatcher or windchime laid atop the mound.
- Right Grave: Marked by a pair of Coral Crab legs stuck into the sand and a stone, with an Axum Jar at the base. The databank entry
Singh - "Tailings Settlement"can also be found on the right grave.
