The Tailings Village is an abandoned settlement located in the Graveyard biome. It was once home to the Axum Tailings, a non-human species.
Description
The village consists of numerous small huts built against the cliffs surrounding the entrance to the Graveyard's subterranean cave system. Many of these structures are unfinished or damaged, with some having fallen off their supports or been crushed by dead coral.
The construction materials are a mix of traditional Axum resources, biological matter, and scavenged items from the Cicada wreck and its pioneers. Notably, one hut incorporates a Dive Elevator into its roofing. Various tools of both Axum and Alterran origin can be found scattered in and around the huts, indicating the Tailings scavenged everything from Power Transmitters to entire Processor units.
A large Marrowbreach stalks the open waters above the village, posing a significant threat to explorers. On the outskirts, there is a small, rudimentary gravesite with three graves marked by coral, crab legs, and Axum tools, accompanied by jars and jewelry.

Databank Entries
Tailings Village Approach
A group of nonhuman structures above a hot, geologically active cave.
- Constructed from salvage and basic crafted materials
- Hot cave may have provided food or energy
- Apparently abandoned
First contact with a tool-using alien species carries significant risk to the individual pioneer and to humanity.
Tailings Village Scan
This structure is not of human origin. It is apparently a dwelling.
- Lightweight skeleton built from organic plastic structures similar to PVC
- Covering of glued fish leather
- Electroformed hatch salvaged from a larger manufactured structure
- Occupant(s) significantly larger than a human
Assessment: portable shelter for a water-dwelling organism. The tool marks and relatively crude construction suggest limited survival skills. Perhaps a post-disaster culture. Leathermaking and gluing imply the presence of semiskilled artisans.
Caution. There has been no publicly acknowledged first contact with a tool-using alien culture since the discovery of the ruins on 4546b. First contact on 4546b led to the death of all but one member of the Aurora crew. First contact with spaceborne kharaa organisms led to the death of thousands of Mongolian colonists. First contact is dangerous. First contact may have consequences for the entire human species.
Proceed with absolute caution.
Singh - "Tailings Settlement"
Field notes, Udal Singh. Observing the settlement above the hot cave. My reprint site is the Tadpole pens.
I don't think the Tailings are very good at survival. I mean, they're better than us! They can digest the food and survive the heavy metals. But what I see here isn't the equivalent of a premodern Earth culture with a sophisticated survival package. It took the Inuit thousands of years to develop their seal hunting skills, and they almost got supernaturally good at it. By comparison, the Tailings seem...unpracticed.
Look at how much salvage they use. I don't think it's a preference, I think it's a dependence. They can't make basic tools like nets and cutters without it.
I think we're looking at the descendants of a sedentary, technological civilization. The children of a bunch of office workers and day trippers forced to learn wilderness survival from scratch.
Uh oh. Activity. I think they heard me talking. I've gotta move.
Ganzo - "Waypoint 3"
Ganzo here. Nine survivors of Habitat. Everyone sound off.
[muffled voices saying hello]
We are going down into the hot cave. We'll rally at the base camp and sync with the biobed. Then we search for Zip's kurultai key, as deep as we can go.
If we feel anything down there, we'll check it out. Calmly. Maybe Anita's right. Maybe the planet will tell us where to go next.
One way or another, we are all gonna live. Even you, hair aa. I'm coming back for you.
