Subnautica 2: How To Get Food And Water

Learn how to manage hunger and thirst in Subnautica 2. This guide covers finding Water Slugs, catching fish near the lifepod, and crafting essential sustenance recipes.

Two of the most important things you'll need to worry about in Subnautica 2 are your calorie and water intake. Since you're underwater, your oxygen is also a concern, but you can't exactly feed yourself by just swimming to the surface, so you'll need to take active steps to ensure these don't reach dangerous levels.

For the most part, this will involve farming specific fish and Water Slugs, and thankfully, most of what you need for basic survival can be found near the lifepod. However, you will need to prep your stomach first by interacting with the Angel Comb closest to the lifepod to increase your compatibility with the planet's food sources.

Water is going to be incredibly straightforward in comparison to food, since it primarily comes from one source. At the moment, only one alien creature can be directly crafted into Water without the need for other materials, and that's Water Slugs. Each Water Slug converts directly into one Water, which restores your Fresh Water intake by +40.

You will also be able to make Isotonic Water once you find Flash Slugs, but this is late game and frankly, less convenient, since it requires both a Flash Slug and Salt to make, for only 15 more points to your water levels than regular water.

Water Slugs are blue, luminescent slugs that are found only on surfaces such as the seafloor or the sides of rock formations. They don't swim and move incredibly slowly, so you won't need to worry about chasing them down. They're also plentiful just about anywhere you go, including right outside your lifepod, so you shouldn't need to search for them.

Because of their glow, they are a bit easier to spot at night, so it's recommended you farm them then if you have the time.

Now, you can eat them as a raw ingredient to restore some of your Water Intake, but it's not recommended. The restoration they offer as a raw ingredient is +15 Water, but it also lowers your Food levels by -5, so this should only be your go-to if you need water that second and don't have time to make it to the nearest Fabricator.

There are also food items that restore some of your water. However, since those recipes are primarily for restoring your calorie intake, and water restoration is just a secondary perk, you can find them in the sections below.

If you have an abundance of Porous Fiber, you can also make water using three of them at the processor, but since it requires three per water, this isn't ideal.

Food, unfortunately, isn't quite as simple as Water. While playing, you'll progressively unlock new ways to restore your food levels, and the best recipes will require several ingredients to craft.

That said, some items, like the Nutrient Blocks you start with, can be found in storage containers at wreckage sites. So be sure to search through any that you come across for a chance to find some free food and water.

For most of the recipes, however, you'll need to track down fish and other ingredients. The easiest option for food early on is going to be the fish you'll find swimming around your lifepod at the start of the game. There will be a few variants, but they're usually in groups, and most have moon in the name.

Each of these fish can be cooked at the Fabricator, producing one cooked fish item that will restore a small portion of your hunger. Like the Water Slugs, you can eat the fish raw, but it's not recommended outside of emergencies due to lower restoration values.

For a complete overview of all the raw food ingredients in the game and where to find them, please see the table below:

Biofuel Block in Subnautica 2.Biofuel Block (Cannot be consumed raw)
This technically isn't a raw ingredient, as it's made using the Processor at your base, but it's being listed here as it's also not considered a prepared food item in this form either and isn't a recipe you can make at the Fabricator. Fibrous Pulp, Crab Feces, and Pent are used to craft this at the Fabricator.
