Food and Water are essential survival mechanics in Subnautica 2. These stats steadily deplete when playing on Survival Mode. The player must maintain their hunger and thirst levels by consuming food and water items. If either stat reaches zero, the player will lose health until they die.

Sustenance is a category of consumable items crafted from certain materials and fauna using the Fabricator. While fish can be eaten raw, using the Fabricator increases their nutritional value and removes their dehydration penalty.

To consume an item, press the "Use" keybind while the item is selected in the PDA. Some foods will also heal the player when consumed.

Mechanics

The player's current food and water levels are displayed as gauges alongside their Health and Oxygen meters in the bottom left of the HUD. The gauge corresponds with the stat's current value, which ranges from 0 to 100 points.

In Survival Mode, the player loses:

  • 1 unit of Water every 15 seconds
  • 1 unit of Food every 21 seconds

Biomods such as Water Retention and Slow Metabolism can help improve Food and Water efficiency.
