The Karakorum Power Plant, also known as the Karakorum Hybrid Power Plant or simply Karakorum, is a massive Axum water-based power plant located far to the east.

Description

Its main structure consists of a massive, fully submerged water turbine, with multiple other smaller structures in the nearby area. An Angel Comb is also located in the Root Canyon below, which grants the adaptation to view Axum Polarized Screens.

Surrounding Buildings

The primary Karakorum Hybrid Power Plant structure is connected to many smaller structures serving various functions. It seems likely that this area was once a large hub of Axum activity, with the power plant serving as the primary fuel source for this group. Most of the nearby buildings are inaccessible, closed off, with only a few platforms containing Pioneer logs as points of interest.

Turbine

The power plant houses a massive water turbine that has been long damaged due to unknown causes. Repairing the turbine reignites the power plant, bringing power to the facility and nearby structures, and allowing access to the Observatory Museum.

Repairing the turbine requires the Axum Vision adaptation, obtained from the Angel Comb directly below the turbine. Once the player has gained this ability, allowing them to access Axum consoles and read their language, they can access the Lower Generator Control and Upper Generator Control to restart the turbine.

This process also requires manually repairing the damaged section, which is located directly across from the Upper Generator Control. To repair the turbine:

  1. Scan the damaged section using a Bioscanner.
  2. Use a Habitat Builder to repair it.

Repair Costs:

Lower Control Room

The Lower Generator Control is located at a depth of 400 meters on the wall of the Root Canyon below the power plant, southeast of the Angel Comb. The control room contains two screens whose purpose is to restart the power plant's Heat Pipe, allowing it to draw energy from the Titan Rockbore below to power the turbine above. This room contains an oxygen enhancer that makes the water breathable.

Upper Control Room

The Upper Generator Control is located at 200 meters depth on the canyon wall below the power plant, southeast of the Angel Comb and directly across from the damaged section of the turbine. This control room has several screens that serve to restart the turbine and reroute power from the power plant to where it needs to go, such as the Axum Observatory. This room contains an oxygen enhancer that makes the water breathable.

Karakorum Power Plant

An enormous Axum power plant. Named 'Karakorum' by pioneers.

  • Originally powered by hot water from the titan rockbore below
  • Later modified to burn methane
  • Destroyed by sabotage
  • Could be repaired and reconnected to the rockbore to generate Axum power
  • Startup procedure will require translating Axum language

Repairs will require an upgraded scanner and enormous quantities of raw material.

Power Plant

This enormous electrical power plant is a hybrid methane/hydroelectric design. Analysis suggests it has been refitted and redesigned several times.

  • Originally a hydroelectric turbine, powered by hot water from the titan rockbore below
  • Redesigned to burn methane (note liquid methane storage tanks and large air intake/exhaust stacks)
  • Generates electricity compatible with Axum power grid; at peak output, capable of powering a major city
  • All methane-burning components apparently sabotaged circa 250 years ago; plant abandoned

Assessment: the plant can be returned to operation if key components are replaced and the heat pipe is reconnected to the titan rockbore below.

Trivia

  • "Karakorum" (which means "The majestic city wall" in Mongolian) was the historical capital of the Mongolian Empire in the 13th century, built by Mongolian khan Ögedei.
