Items

CHBC Live Poster

The CHBC Live Poster was both designed and named in tribute to the late CHBCLive, a Chinese fan of Subnautica who made translations and tutorials for the game's Chinese audience.

The Translation Device, which similarly made tribute to CHBCLive, can be seen at the bottom of the poster.

Pioneer Program Poster

The name "A. Jones" on the Pioneer Program Poster is in tribute to the late Andrew Jones, a level designer who worked on both Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero.

Additionally, the android seen in the poster is an Alterra-branded version of the player avatar from the unreleased game Future Perfect, another Unknown Worlds project Jones had worked on.

Blender Monkey

There is a Blender Monkey buried in a patch of grass in the Overgrown Ruins. The monkey head has a brown and glowing blue texture and appears to have a short idle animation, though it is nearly impossible to see under normal circumstances. A small part of its head can be seen through the ground but it is mostly hidden by grass. Using a Habitat Builder, one can clearly see the monkey by hovering a buildable exterior object near its location.

Drinking Water Slug

Found roughly around the Therapy Room Wreck, located roughly southeast from the Axum Observatory, a Water Slug can be found hidden inside of a crate with a bottle of Mild Acid. This was confirmed by a dev to be intentionally placed.

Happy as a Clam

South of the Shallows, beyond the edge of the map is a clam with two google eyes on top of it. The clam has a similar model to the Great Jaw and clam shells found in the Intermediary Basin.

Hidden Raccoon

Northeast of the Great Jaw in a cave filled with Silver, there is a hidden raccoon made out of primitive shapes. It has a conal face, two large black eyes, and a striped tail.

Hungry Water Slug

Far in the back of the Root Canyon, behind the Therapy Room hides a Water Slug in a narrow crevice with a Nutrient Block.

Needled Relic

The World Tree Relic found next to Ruby's blackbox in the Needler Nest has been struck by a Needler Mango, seemingly in reference to the Subnautica 2 Early Access Cinematic Trailer, in which the Relic carried by Felix is damaged in the same way.

Coordinates: -199854, 454670, Depth 296 meters

Sponge DJ

In the tunnel reaching from the Hot Cave Basecamp to the surface of the Graveyard is a small nook containing a sponge with arms and eyes seemingly playing music to a group of smaller gathered sponges. The DJ has a makeshift table with some shapes on it as well as Christmas tree worm-like organism as a hat on its head. Approaching the DJ triggers a Heat Warning from the PDA.

The christmas tree worm-like organism appears abundantly in pre-release screenshots of an early Graveyard, but presently only appears on this easter egg.

The Face

Deep within the hole where Sleep Bay 3 lies is an "angry face" made out of primitive shapes. It looks similar to the angry face visible in the Feedback menu. Upon approaching the face, a loud leviathan-like roar can be heard.

The face is oriented roughly eastward and rests on the seafloor well below the safe depth of the Tadpole (750 m). It is much easier to reach the face in Creative Mode.

Voicelines

Mousetrap

The recording that plays upon picking up Quaker's Blackbox in the Old Habitat has her threatening to use a mousetrap on NoA. According to senior narrative designer Seth Dickinson, this is a reference to the 1982 sci-fi novel 2010: Odyssey Two, in which an "unhackable AI killswitch" is referred to as a mousetrap.

"I don't expect anyone to get the reference. It's a device from 2010: Odyssey Two — an unhackable AI killswitch they planned to use if HAL 9000 went rogue again" - August 18, 2026

Ninja Miners

The line spoken by the PDA after acquiring Gold for the first time makes reference to real-world Mongolian ninja miners, who would resemble the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when they carried their panning bowls on their backs.
