The Needler Nest is a tall mesa located in the Overgrown Ruins, just east of the Rosetta Stone. As the name suggests, the area serves as a nesting grounds for the Needler Mango.

236,000 hours ago, Ruby attempted to cross through the nest while en route to EVA Prep, but was attacked and killed by two adult Needlers. Her Tadpole and its Depth Module were lost as a result.

Overview

The nest is a monolithic, naturally-occurring structure with high walls and a cavernous interior. As the player nears the structure, spent tusks can be found embedded in the sides of cliffs and pillars, signifying that they have entered Needler territory.

Exterior

The exterior of the nest is similar in appearance to the rest of the Overgrown Ruins, consisting of many of the same geological formations and sessile lifeforms. Among the telltale tusks dotting the walls are larger, harvestable Enamel Husks which drop Creature Enamel when blasted by a Sonic Resonator. A small number of Gateway Spires can be found growing on the nest’s western side, allowing for quick traversal through some of its interior spaces. On the nest’s two uppermost plateaus are a pair of ancient Axum ruins, partially obscured by Oblast Coral growths.

Next to the lower ruins is a small, partially collapsed Pioneer worksite. The site was evidently attacked by Needlers in the past, as tusks can be found stuck in just about every surface, including containers, tables, and chairs. Titanium, Silver, Fibers, and a Basic First Aid Kit can be found in various containers, as well as scans for the Improved Fins, Lab Chair, and Modification Station. The Databank entry Singh - “Why are the Axum hostile?” can be found on a table. Fallen debris can be found 45 meters below the worksite, including scans for the Improved Fins, Lab Chair, Time of Day Display, and some loose Sulfur.

Players should be extra cautious when exploring near the top of the nest, as a Needler three times the usual size can be found patrolling the waters above.

Interior

The interior of the nest consists of an open, spacious cave system cleanly divided into two levels. Each level is accessible through large openings in the mesa’s exterior walls, as well as various smaller holes in the floor and ceiling. The cave’s ceilings are dominated by the same slime-like lifeform as on the outside, and the floors are covered in groupings of an unidentified purple lifeform. Hidden among some of these groups are hatched Needler eggs, though some eggs can also be found out in the open. On the upper level, a Work Light can be found by some of these eggs.

Ruby’s Tadpole—and its attached Haul Chassis—can be found on the seabed of the lower level, pierced by Needler tusks and still emitting its emergency lights and alarm. Next to the wreck is the Recipe Data Card for the Tadpole Depth Module Mk. 1. On the same level, Blackbox - Ruby (Depth 295M - Abandoned her Tadpole) can be found alongside Improved Fins, a Rebreather, and a World Tree Relic, all surrounded by more tusks.
