"HEAT DANGER CRITICAL" — PDA

Temperature is an environmental mechanic in Subnautica 2 that can damage the Player and function as a source of Energy.

Heat Sources

The primary source of heat in the playable area is the Graveyard, which boasts a constant average temperature of 85°C. The caves beneath it are hotter, having an average temperature of 100°C. The graveyard and its caves are full of thermal vents which are extremely hot, reaching temperatures of nearly 200°C.

Thermal Vent Clusters around the Karakorum Power Plant can reach equally high temperatures.

Damage

Entering an area with a high temperature will have different effects on the Player, until eventually they start taking damage after reaching a certain threshold. This threshold changes depending on whether or not the Player has acquired the Heat Tolerance Adaptation.

Regardless of whether or not the Player has acquired the adaptation, when entering an area with temperatures over ~25°C, a thermometer UI will activate above the crosshair, alerting the Player of the rising temperature. This pop-up will not disappear until the Player retreats into an area with a below 20°C temperature.

Temperature effects on Player

EffectThreshold without Adaptation(°C)Threshold with Adaptation(°C)
PDA Heat Warning45°C105°C
Audio-Visual Effects65°C110°C
Continuous Damage75°C126°C

When above the damage threshold, the Player will take 10 health points of damage per 3 seconds.

At 150°C the PDA will issue a "Heat Danger Critical" warning, however the amount of damage the Player takes remains the same.

Energy

Heat sources can provide perpetual energy via the use of Thermal Plants, making them one of the strongest sources of energy in the game.

Thermal Plants do not connect directly to seabases and require Power Transmitters to be used.

The thermal energy output changes depending on temperature, ranging from 1-16 energy units per Thermal Plant. If the temperature is below 25°C, Thermal Plants will always produce 1 energy unit.
