Testament of Pearl Spawn. I give it to Old Black Bulb to collect and keep safe.
Grief. A cast of refugees reached us today. Still molted for the chilled and vented water of Xanadu, they dove to us but could not breathe. "Help us!" they clattered. "We must save the millions who are our kin!" This is the madness of the city dweller.
They tore at the pearl containers in search of supplies. Pearl Taster said to me: "I am old and my life is not so vital. I will try to save them. Delight me, child."
I played the harp but the collectors were berserk with sound and the hate of thieves. They cracked open Pearl Taster and the refugees. They know our family, four hundred and thirty two years. But they know their own delight, one hundred million years older. They have kept their strangeness.
Deep Bride will take some zoes down to black water. I will remain to stop the collectors from eating the great jaws.
I tried to feed a portion of our zoes to the collectors, so that Pearl Taster's delight would go into them. But they would not eat. Only clean the infants and flash at them. Old Black Bulb roared and the tar stirred.
I think I will name myself Pearl Flyer.
