Signals are UI markers that help the player keep track of various locations and lead the player to story-relevant points of interest.
Signals are managed through a menu in the PDA. Each signal has its own name, icon, and color and can be individually toggled. Enabled Signals can be seen even while the player is not in their PDA, and will show the distance to that Signal's location as long as the player is at least 20 meters away.
Signals, whether player-created or otherwise, can be edited to change their name or color. Signal names are limited to 50 characters when edited in the menu. Currently, the only color options are blue, purple, red, orange, or green. Changing the color of the signal changes its corresponding icon outside of the PDA. The icon or location of each Signal cannot be changed by the player, although the sources of player-created Signals can be moved. There is no way to permanently delete story-created Signals.
Story Signals
Some Signals are created through the story. The Lifepod emits a Signal once it reaches the surface of Proteus. When visiting certain locations, the PDA will add a Signal to the menu to be able to return to that location easily in the future. Infected Angel Combs will trigger a Signal to be added to their location which will be removed when the Angel Comb is cured. Signals are also generated by NoA occasionally when it detects the blackbox of a deceased pioneer. NoA will also generate a signal for the Alien Ruins.

Player-Generated Signals
The player can also create Signals of their own in a few ways. The Beacon can be constructed anywhere and emits an editable Signal, much like the Habitat Beacon which does the same at Seabases. The Tadpole also constantly emits a Signal to help the player keep track of its location. The Scanner Station also creates smaller, temporary Signals when scanning resources or locations.
Pings
Using the middle mouse button, players can create a temporary ping at the location they are looking at. This ping signal shows the distance to the target as well as the name of the player who created it. In Multiplayer, all players can see each others' pings and may have one ping at a time each - pinging again removes the previous ping. Pings also change depending on the targeted object, potentially showing a symbol of a Lifeform or of Raw Materials.
