Research Outpost


The Research Outpost is a Pioneer Seabase located on the edge of the Overgrown Ruins, to the left and back of the Observatory Museum.

The outpost was likely instrumental in researching Axum installations such as the Observatory and the nearby Karakorum Power Plant.

Exterior

Compared to most other abandoned seabases, the Research Outpost is largely intact and free of lifeform growth. A large Growbed can be found on the roof of the main structure, where a few Cradle Shootroots have been planted.

A cable leading out from the base's entrance can be followed, which first runs through a small worksite with a Recipe Data Card for the High Capacity Air Tank. Following the cable further down leads to a larger worksite platform, which has scans for the Hydroelectric Turbine, Improved Fins, Lab Chair, Processor, and Rebreather. There are also a couple of open chests and crates that contain Distraction Flares and a Basic First Aid Kit. Another, thicker cable can be followed even further down to a derelict Thermal Plant, just outside of a Thermal Vent Cluster.

Interior

First Observation Room

Entering from the main entrance, there is a decently-sized observation room constructed using a half Round Room. This room contains scans for the Dining Table, Floor Locker, Trashcan, and Lab Chair.

On the tables in front of the window, there is a Recipe Data Card for the Tadpole's Engine Efficiency upgrade, as well as the ''Mantis/Sophie/Ruby - "Depth module lost in Needler nest"'' Databank entry.

Barracks

Going left from the main entrance, there is a short corridor leading to the barracks. On the left, there is a Power Storage unit, and on the right, a Nook with a Modification Station fragment. The Nook has no window pane, and so can be used as an alternative entrance and exit.

Down the hallway, there are two more rooms on either side. On the left is the sleeping quarters, with four sets of bunkbeds. In the middle of these is a CHBC Live Poster. A power terminal can be found in here as well, which powers several amenities in the rest of the base once a Basic Battery is inserted.

The room opposite the sleeping quarters is protected by a force field, making it the only room that has not been flooded. A working Fabricator and Biobed can be found here, as well as a non-working Processor and two Wall Lockers. One locker has a Basic Battery and Power Cell, the other has Copper, Gold, Titanium, and Silver.

Second Observation Room

Following the cable down the hall leads to the second observation room, which has been built similarly to the first. In this room are more scans for the Floor Locker and Dining Table, as well as a working Biolab and the resident NoA unit.

Mantis/Sophie/Ruby - "Depth module lost in Needler Nest"

MANTIS: Sorry, boss, what's going on?

SOPHIE: Wait one. Ruby - it's Butcher. Are you with your Tadpole?

RUBY [on intercom]: Right outside, boss. What's up?

SOPHIE: Go direct southeast from the research base, about 500 meters, until you find the Cicada wreckage on the tall mesa. Flash your lights and make some noise. Ram it if you have to.

RUBY [on intercom]: Copy. Steer southeast, 500 meters, same depth. Can I ask why?

SOPHIE: Tuba, Singh and Mel just printed back here. They were testing the upgraded scanner and resonator when Axum Tailings attacked them. Killed them and took Iso. He's still alive. I've tracked his blackbox to the Cicada wreck nearby.

RUBY: [on intercom] Uh...copy. Can't we just wait for them to finish him off?

SOPHIE: He's got Nahema's super scanner. She'll murder me if I lose it. Try to scare the Tailings off. I'll get a team out there to recover his effects.

RUBY [on intercom, crackling]: *Boss, I've picked up a couple tails. Looks like - two adult needlers - need to evade - *

MANTIS: Boss, her Tadpole has our only depth module.

SOPHIE: Oh, Christ. [muttering] Come on, Ruby...PDA, log my conduct here for kurultai review.
