"The resonator's blueprints include several components not based on Alterra designs-- or any known human engineering. Despite these irregularities, the resonator will selectively fracture mineral deposits and a narrow range of alien biomolecules." — PDA upon first creation of Sonic Resonator

The Sonic Resonator is a multifunctional tool, with uses in mining resource deposits, and personal defence against hostile Lifeforms.

Appearance

The Sonic Resonator features a handle on the back, a foregrip on the left side, and a white, rectangular body. A set of emitters are mounted on the front, which generate the sonic pulse and flare out when the device is charging. A panel pops out from the top for several seconds after a blast, presumably to cool the tool down. A holographic display is present on the top, and the battery is located on the side.

Usage

The Sonic Resonator emits a sonic blast, which can be used to mine large resource deposits, as well as to stun and deter mobile Lifeforms. The Sonic Resonator is highly effective in preventing hostile creature attacks.

When the player approaches a resource deposit or destructible Bloom organisms, the crosshair will enlarge and turn green indicating the Sonic Resonator can be used, alongside a HUD pop-up. This is not the case when approaching a creature that can be stunned using the Sonic Resonator.

The Sonic Resonator is capable of stunning most creatures for up to 10 seconds.

The Sonic Resonator takes about one second to fully charge. Releasing the use key before it is fully charged will cancel the blast, and a fully charged blast can be held indefinitely. When emitting a blast, the Sonic Resonator will knock the user back a short distance.

The Sonic Resonator requires a Battery to operate.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Equip to quick-access toolbelt. Aim at target—such as a resource deposit or attacking predator—and depress trigger to charge a sonic pulse. Release to emit pulse. Against solid crystalline objects, release the pulse when the reticle closes to shatter.

Valid targets trigger an icon in your HUD, prompting you to equip and use the resonator. common targets include large resource depots and viral crystals.

This is not an approved Alterra product. This PDA cannot offer guarantees of performance or safety. Replace battery when depleted.

BACKGROUND

The Sonic Resonator is a modified propulsion/repulsion cannon chassis carrying a phased-array sonar. The sonar's electronic and mechanical principles are simple and easily fabricated, but distinct from any known design pattern. Either the sonar was invented from first principles by a particularly brilliant colonist, or it was derived from nonhuman technology.

The resonator is generally nonlethal. Its pulse may deter attackers, but will not cause long term harm unless the attacker is a solid crystalline object. The exception is biomass infected by bloom virus, which the resonator is tuned to destroy.

Speculative development suggests several possible improvements to this device, perhaps culminating in a saser (an acoustic laser). Do not discharge towards other colonists. Hearing protection recommended for prolonged use.
