"Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?" ― PDA, Dialogue

The Dunes is a biome located west from Lifepod 5, on the edge of the map. It borders the Grassy Plateaus, Sea Treader's Path, Safe Shallows, both Blood Kelp Zones, the Northwestern Mushroom Forest, and the Crater Edge.

Key Locations

  • Large Wrecks: Three wrecks are found here. One near the Northwestern Mushroom Forest (slid down from the forest) and two smaller ones near the Sea Treader's Path border.
  • Meteor Crater: A large crater from a meteor impact, close to the Northern Blood Kelp Zone border. Contains a Sanctuary Cache.
  • Large Sinkhole: Located approximately 220m south from Wreck 6. Contains Dunes Caves, a Cuddlefish egg, four Sea Crowns, and thermal vents.
  • Dunes Caves: Entrances located within the sinkhole area.
  • Alien Vent Entrance Point: Found in the Dunes.
  • Sea Emperor Juvenile: One of five juveniles can be found here after hatching the Sea Emperor Leviathan Eggs.

Description

The Dunes feature open waters and vast, sandy plains and dunes, sparsely littered with various types of rock structures. It is home to many dangerous fauna, most notably eight Reaper Leviathans that patrol the open spaces. These leviathans and the PDA summary heavily discourage players from entering the biome.

The biome is relatively shallow at its borders but slopes down to very deep sections. Gasopods and their eggs are found near hydrothermal vents, along with Lithium and Rubies. Reaper Leviathans often wander close to these vents.

Even during the day, the Dunes are quite dark and murky, making it difficult to see threats. It is recommended to keep track of Reaper Leviathan locations and give those areas a wide berth. Building a base here requires a Scanner Room with a HUD Chip to effectively monitor nearby threats.

Trivia

  • The Dunes once contained entrances to the Inactive Lava Zone and Lost River.
  • The Dunes is the second largest biome in Subnautica, second only to the Crash Zone.
  • At coordinates (-1844.4, -367.2, 864.9), even though the player is still in the Dunes, the game considers the biome to be the Crater Edge and will spawn Ghost Leviathans accordingly, despite the presence of harvesting nodes below.
