Game Modes are different ways to play Subnautica 2. The game mode is individually chosen for each new save when that save is created, and cannot be changed after. In Multiplayer, the game mode chosen for the save affects all players. There are two game modes currently available: Survival Mode and Creative Mode. More game modes have been confirmed to be added in the future, though no specifics have been given.
Survival Mode

In Survival Mode, the player must manage their Oxygen, Food, Water, and Health meters while exploring the world. Oxygen limits a player's diving capabilities, meaning they must craft new Equipment to explore deeper under the ocean. Players must catch or farm food and water and avoid dangerous predators. Failing to manage any of these requirements will result in death, causing the player to lose some of their items and respawn at their assigned Biobed.
To craft new items, the player must find blueprints left behind by previous pioneers. They must gather resources from the environment to craft these items, requiring resources from all over the playable area. The player must manage the Energy of their Tools and Seabases using various power sources.
Creative Mode

In Creative Mode, the player has no limiting survival requirements and can freely explore the world. Oxygen, food, water, and health meters are not present. All blueprints are unlocked by default and items cost nothing to craft. The player starts with the following items equipped:
- Flashlight
- Scanner
- Habitat Builder
- Wakemaker
- Sonic Resonator
- Distraction Flare
- Survival Multitool
- Improved Fins
- Ultra High Capacity Air Tank
The player has all Adaptations unlocked by default. Seabases, Vehicles, and Tools require no Energy, and Vehicles do not suffer damage from high pressure or impacts. Databank entries are not automatically unlocked in Creative Mode. Hostile creatures do not attack the player.
Hardcore Mode

Hardcore Mode is a challenging game mode in which death is permanent. This mode existed in previous Subnautica games but has not yet been implemented in Subnautica 2. However, an icon exists in the files implying it may be a planned addition in the future.
