The Welcome Center is a Pioneer Seabase located in the Shallows, southeast of the Lifepod. Originally constructed to welcome newly-printed Pioneers exiting from the once-attached Sleep Bay 3, it is one of the first structures a player is likely to encounter.

At unknown points in time, the center was sabotaged in two ways: The sleep bay was "picked up and hurled" into a nearby chasm, and a bomb was planted underneath the main structure by Nahema Nakota.

Exterior

Main Structure

In the years following Nahema's sabotage and the subsequent abandoning of the Welcome Center, the structure has slowly been overtaken by Coral Dome growths. Despite its derelict state, working light sticks still illuminate the exterior.

Next to the center's sign, a crate can be found containing a Habitat Builder fragment, while several Water Slugs and an Acid Raion can be found around the perimeter.

On the left side of the exterior is a cable that runs all the way to the Heat Tolerance Angel Comb, with Camp One just beyond it. NoA suggests that this cable was intentionally cut years ago.

Detonator Cave

A small cave can be found underneath the structure, with openings found on the front and back sides of the cliff it stands on. It is in this cave that the bomb was planted, as evidenced by the Programmable Detonator databank entry found here.

Another Acid Raion, Water Slug, and Habitat Builder fragment can also be found in the cave, as well as an Oxygen Tunic.

Interior

Biolab Room

Right inside the entrance of the Welcome Center is a small room that notably features a Biolab, though it is initially powered off. A knocked-over Dining Table can be scanned here, as well as a couple of Wall Light Smalls.

Main Room

To the left is the main room, which sustained the most damage from Nahema's bomb. The resulting explosion has left a hole in the floor which leads to the cave, accessed by removing the Metal Salvage covering it. Doing so also frees the bubbles created by the Oxygen Tunic below.

Another source of oxygen can be found in the ceiling, where more coral growths have formed a natural air pocket containing Quartz. A Distraction Flare can also be found stuck inside one of the growths.

Display tanks flank the left and right sides of the room, though one tank in particular—the middle tank on the left side—can be scanned, prompting the PDA to use Samantha Ayou's actions as an example of sabotage carrying severe consequences.

On the wall left of the three display cases is a New Life Poster. On the corner diagonal to the poster is a power terminal, with cables connecting it to the Biolab and the resident NoA unit. Inserting a Basic Battery into the terminal turns on both facilities.

NoA Terminal

There is a NoA terminal at the Welcome Center. Interacting with it provides access to several databank entries and lore regarding the initial arrival on Proteus.

Blueprints and Fragments

The following blueprints and fragments can be obtained or scanned at the Welcome Center:

Mantis - "Basic basebuilding"

Hello. I am Zygimantis Tarvydas. Formerly EVA engineer on Mongolian Steppes. Now lead diver of this mess.

Here is my formula for a quick base. Fill up on titanium, quartz and copper. Get your builder tool. Wave it around a bit, check the battery, get comfortable.

Build a corridor. Put a solar panel on top. You must have power to make air.

Put a hatch on the end. Now you can go inside. Build lockers. Add fabricator. It will draw from your lockers automatically - nice, huh?

Now you have made a perfect work camp. Later you can add a room for biobed, processor, scanner station, a nice bed, maybe grow some plants. The rest will follow.

Welcome Center Recording

Retrieving voice data message.

SOPHIE: Welcome back, pioneer. I'm Sophie Boucher, kurultai surgeon. By now you know we're not on Zezura.

We call this planet Proteus. We don't know when rescue will find us. For the sake of all our sleeping friends, we have to learn how to survive. Nahema?

NAHEMA: Hey, fellow debt slave. I'm Nahema Nakota, ecologist. Take a sip of seawater. Notice that sweet blood taste under the salt? That's a toxic dose of heavy metals. Nobody's survived past three months. It's a beautiful place to die over and over again—

SOPHIE: -but don't let that beauty seduce you, pioneer. Exposure to Proteus causes a delusion we call Masefield syndrome...the call of the sea. People may tell you it's a gift. Ignore them. You remember what kharaa did to our homes. You know we can't trust alien biology.

We've set up a lab here with a few basic biomods. They're safe. But if you start to hear voices, or if you get the urge to swim to the tree, don't go.

Habitat is due north. We'll come pick you up. See you soon, pioneer.
